OVERVIEW

Guide the development of young minds in your classroom.

If you have an undergraduate degree and want to take the next step into teaching, the Master of Teaching will qualify you to teach in primary schools across Australia. You will build on your prior study and develop effective teaching techniques that engage and inspire your students.

Led by experienced education professionals with recent or current teaching practice, this course combines online learning with teaching placements in in real school classrooms. Our students get great feedback from their placement schools – we ensure you are prepared and supported to make your placement a positive experience.

Are you ready for more placement opportunities? The Master of Teaching (Primary) is also uniquely designed to run across four teaching periods a year to better align with Victorian school terms and dates. This new course structure will help you find more teaching placements that suit your personal teaching goals.

As a Swinburne Online student, you will also have access to unique development opportunities as part of the Access Quality Teaching Initiative. Through this initiative you will be placed in professional experience placements in regional, remote and/or lower socio-educational advantage schools in Victoria, giving you valuable experience with a diverse range of educational communities.

When you graduate, you’ll be qualified to practice as a primary teacher, with accreditation from the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).

This course is not available to international students.

Structure

Your course breakdown:

To be awarded the Master of Teaching (Primary) you must complete 16 units:

  • 2 Education Foundation Units
  • 6 Education Discipline Units
  • 7 Advanced Education Units
  • 2 not-for-credit Placements
  • 1 Credited Placement

Your two not-for-credit placements are embedded into specific theory units, which will set you on a strong path to put theory into practice as you develop your teaching skills.

Your units are led by experienced education professionals with recent or current teaching experience and focus on arming you with the practical skills you can take straight into the classroom. You will also undertake supervised practicum units that give you the opportunity to work and learn in an Australian school.

Primary specialisation

All pre-service teachers in a primary or early childhood primary initial teacher education courses must complete a primary specialisation component. It is an AlTSL requirement for all Primary ITE course accreditation.

This will result in Graduates who are generalist Primary Teachers with a specialisation. This is distinct from teachers who fulfil specialist roles in schools such as a health/physical education teacher.

These requirements will become more explicit once you are enrolled in the relevant unit.

Entry Requirements

Entry Criteria

To gain entry to this course, applicants must have completed a recognised bachelor degree relevant in one or more areas of the Primary curriculum and meet the English language requirements.

From 2018, under the new AITSL and government Initial Teacher Education (ITE) requirements, all students applying to ITE courses across Australia will need meet suitability for teaching (non-academic selection) criteria as a part of course entry criteria.

  • There are 16 units in this course, each unit is worth 12.5 credit point units.

The Fraser Foundation scholarship

The Fraser Foundation offers scholarships to help all students achieve their full potential in the field of Early Childhood Education. They are awarded to people from all backgrounds and study areas and are not just for high academic achievers.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship with The Fraser Foundation you must (include but not limited to):

  • have a passion for and commitment to education and early childhood learning
  • have enrolled or intend to enrol as a full-time or part-time student in an approved Australian course of early childhood education
  • commitment to completing your chosen course/degree
  • be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident
  • can show/prove a genuine need for support or assistance (for example financial hardship, vulnerability, ATSI or rural or remote location etc)
  • be 17 years of age or older.

Victorian Government scholarships

The Victorian Government is now offering scholarships to encourage early childhood teachers throughout the state through the Early Childhood Scholarship Program. Students applying for an approved qualification may be eligible to receive up to $12,000 towards an early childhood graduate diploma.

Scholarships are available for both new and current students.
